ANALYSIS OF LONGITUDINAL BENDING MOMENTS MEASURED IN HEAD WAVES
Describes experiments to determine longitudinal bending moments amidships with thirty-three models, representing a wide range of ship forms with block coefficients from 0.5 to 0.88. The results are presented as predictions of bending moment in irregular head waves in a dimensionless form so that bending moments of geometrically similar ships of any length in waves with any chosen combination of significant waveheight and average period may be derived. An analysis of these data leads to equations for estimating bending moments from the principal dimensions, form factors, weight distribution and speed. Values so estimated are found to be in good agreement with data from methodical series experiments run at St. Albans and elsewhere, and with other published data.
