THE USE OF REPLACEMENT MATERIALS IN ASPHALTIC CONCRETE

This report summarizes some of the current activity taking place in the search for suitable replacements for conventional highway aggregates, either through the necessity of diminished aggregate supply or the need to dispose of an unsightly problem. The following materials are discussed: (1) waste glass; (2) bottom ash; (3) synthetic lightweight aggregates; and (4) ground tires. The use of epoxy resin systems in bituminous construction is also reviewed since the high stabilities that can be obtianed suggest the possibility of using weaker aggregates than current specifications now permit.
