A FUNDAMENTAL STRUCTURAL DESIGN PROCEDURE FOR FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS

This paper is an attempt to bring together various research efforts and incorporate them in a structural design approach to flexible pavement design. The approach is based on treating the layered pavement system as a structure in the traditional civil engineering manner and designing it accordingly. A framework for the design procedure is presented and is outlined in a simple flow diagram. The design process involves the consideration of traffic loading, material characteristics under repeated dynamic loads, the computation of load induced stresses and strains and their comparison with the maximum allowable values for the various materials in the structure. An iterative procedure which modifies an initial estimate of layer thicknesses and materials is used in order to produce a pavement which is satisfactory both structurally and economically. The difficulty of applying this method lies in the complexity of the structure, materials, loading, environment and criteria of performance. However, certain simplifications can be made and the procedure presented is based on a simple fundamental approach to the problem. The basis of the method is the availability of computer solutions for the linear elastic stress analysis of the structure. More sophisticated programs are being developed to deal more realistically with the complexities both of the structure and the materials, but as yet sufficient information is not available on the material characteristics and performance criteria to warrant their use. It is the authors' opinion that linear elastic theory may be used in the manner presented with some confidence and a design example of the procedure is given. One of the aims of the paper is to highlight those areas where more research effect is needed, such as the important aspect of pavement performance and its correlation with allowable stresses. strains and deformations in the constituent materials of the pavement. /Author/
