BETTER ROADS AT LOWER ENGINEERING COSTS

The role of interactive computing at Oklahoma's highway department begins with the acquisition of photogrammetric data--itself highly automated through use of a small sensor-based computer. Aerial photographs are converted into precise geometric coordinates the engineers need in order to plan and estimate costs for a new road section. From this basic stage, the system continues through earthwork considerations, roadway planning and property purchase determinations to the actual design of road segments, curves, intersections, interchanges, bridges and even water drainage facilities that the new road will require. Remote terminals scattered throughout the highway department provide two-way communications capability between the engineers and the computer. The conversational coordinate geometry system, or "Oklahoma CoGo," as it has come to be known, incorporates dozens of individual programs, each of which is sub-routinized for use in whole, in part or in combination. It is applicable to the full range of engineering functions.
