THE FUTURE OF DIGITAL MAPPING IN THE ORDANCE SURVEY

The Ordnance Survey, whose largest task is the production of large scale maps of Great Britain, has moved from the research and development to the pilot production stage in its digital mapping program. It views the data as an important product in its own right and one which is distinct from the conventional map of which the production may be a byproduct, by automated means, of the incorporation of a map into the data bank. It believes that this data will be of major use both inside and outside the survey organization that produces it.
