SHEAR LAG IN BOX GIRDER BRIDGES

A series of tests has been carried out on a perspex model box girder to measure shear lag effects for various spans and loading, including prestress. Analytical solutions were obtained using finite element analysis and the results obtained were compared with experimental values. Good agreement was obtained and it was concluded that shear lag effects can cause significant tensile stresses at the supports of continuous prestressed concrete box girders especially for short spans and/or wide boxes. /Author/
