THE DISTRIBUTION OF SHEAR FORCE RESISTED BY SHEAR CONNECTORS IN COMPOSITE, SINGLE SPAN T-BEAM BRIDGES

The lateral distribution of shear to the shear connectors in single span, composite steel and concrete T-beam bridges under the effects of vehicle loading can vary significantly from the lateral distribution of bending moment to the T-beams. This paper describes a theoretical investigation which gives some idea, in certain cases, of the magnitude of the error which can be made in design by assuming that the lateral distribution of shear is the same as the lateral distribution of bending moment as specified by the current NAASRA Highway Bridge Design Specification (1970). The error was found to be on the safe side in some cases. In others, safety margins were found to be significantly reduced. /Author/
