AN AUTOMATIC HEADWAY AND LATERAL CONTROL SYSTEM FOR ROAD VEHICLES

A system is described in which lane number, longitudinal position, acceleration and other data are transmitted over a microwave telemetry link by each vehicle to all others within a range of 200 M. The range to the nearest vehicle ahead in own lane is obtained by examining position differences. Position is measured by counting wheel revolutions, periodic corrections being made by means of markers set in the road surface. The requirements for markers and the cooperation of other vehicles are offset by the system flexibility which makes automatic merging and lane changing possible.
