BN COMPLETING SPARK ARRESTOR INSTALLATIONS

A systemwide program undertaken by Burlington Northern to fit all its non-turbocharged locomotives (745 per-1960 models) with barrel-type spark arrestors, is nearing completion. The units, which are 61 inches long, 26 inches wide and 47 inches high, are basically of welded steel. Metal deflectors inside the housing guide the sparks away from the stack and into traps which are emptied periodically.
