INTRODUCTION AND SUBSEQUENT RATIONALISATION OF BR SHUNTERS AND GENERAL-PURPOSE DIESELS
Initial prototypes in 1920s give place to units of 250-300 hp and by the mid-1930s LMS trials with six-coupled units of 350 hp establish a design which became standard for that railway and BR on nationalisation. 1952 saw also a 204 hp six-coupled shunter introduced in appreciable numbers but these have dwindled in numbers whilst a 650 hp six-coupled introduced in 1964 did not find favour and was withdrawn early in this decade as were other line-service units of 900 and 1,000 hp, leaving only the English Electric Type 1 Bo-Bo's of this output range in service today.
