Numerical control techniques are now used at IIT Research Institute to produce three-dimensional scale models of mineral deposits in geological strata. Represented as mesh of points, important parameters such as stratum depth and thickness are reduced to bi-cubic surfaces by APT (Automatically Programmed Tools) System. Information from numerical control tape is then used to direct machining of model from styro-foam, laminated plastic, wood, or metal. Isometric views of surface are by-products. New IITRI technique has applications in mining and petrochemical industries, where accurate representation of exploration data is desired. /IITRI/
