VEHICLE DETECTION ON MOTORWAYS. FINAL REPORT
FOERVARNING FOER OLYCKSRISKER PAA STOERRE TRAFIKLEDER. SLUTRAPPORT
The purpose of the project described in this report was to develop a vehicle detector for motorways, and to evaluate the use of such a detector as a device to warn motorists of impending danger. The detector measures vehicle density (vehicles per km), and by placing the detector in long loops with appropriate intervals along the road, information on the density and the spread of the traffic is obtained. By relating that information to the velocity and the flow of the traffic, road conditions etc, a good picture of the traffic situation is thus obtained and can be used to warn motorists at critical points. The detector has been tested under real conditions with good results. /TRRL/
