TENSION-LEG PLATFORM WILL GET AT-SEA TEST NEXT YEAR
A description is given of a design for a tension-leg oil drilling platform. The buoyancy of the surface structure exceeds its weight and is held in place by tensioned vertical anchor cables. Advantages of the TLP concept are enumerated, and cost studies are briefly described which show that TLP's located in severe weather locations become cost competitive with fixed platforms at 250-300 feet water depths. Design concepts, development and different platform types are all discussed, including and anchoring capability of the individual platforms.
