DESIGN OF THE VERTICALLY STABLE SPHERICAL DRILL PLATFORM FOR MAXIMUM STABILITY

This paper describes specific design features of a proposed spherical drill platform. As conceived by the authors, most shipyards will be able to build, overhaul or repair this small, compact platform, as well as realizing substantially reduced construction costs, maintenance costs and insurance costs. Costs of transporting the platform are anticipated to be less than costs associated with conventional platform designs. The design parameters for the platform are developed and a graphic presentation of roll and heave response are provided. The platform response to ocean waves is examined based on a purely sinusoidal wave and on a Stoke's 2nd order wave solution.
