VIBRATIONS AND CRACK FORMATION FROM BLAST HOLES. PART REPORT NO 3. A LITERATURE STUDY

This paper is one in a series on the project "controlled blasting in unsound rock" that is being carried out at the Lulea University of Technology. The purpose of this report is to systematize present knowledge and to provide a theoretical background for what happens around a blasthole. Several formulas for quantitative calculations of the length of macro fractures, vibration velocities and the largest distance between two blastholes in a contour line are presented. An indication is given to the effect that controlled blasting of unsound rock can be accomplished with high blast velocity explosives (directed charge). It is also shown that the damage criteria for buildings and rocks are different. Finally, several areas for future research are outlined. The report contains a detailed list of references. /TRRL/
