AUTOMATIC WELDING AT SEA
The distinctive features of the CRC-Crose International, Inc. automatic welding process are discussed and compared with conventional welding processes and techniques. This automatic process is intended to fulfill the need for a faster pipe joining method in offshore pipeline construction. One of the primary features of the CRC-Crose welding process is the use of a special bevel which is prepared on-site. The pipe is moved directly from the beveling machine to the stalking unit so that no in-transit damage can occur. At the time of publication, Brown & Root, Inc. had secured exclusive rights to the use of the CRC-Crose automatic welding process in marine operations. Significant attention is devoted in this article to describe the necessary modifications to existing pipe-laying barge facilities and preparations for the automatic welding system. Personnel and management considerations required for implementing the system are examined. Additional effects are being made to improve the speed of operation of the external X-ray inspection units which are commonly used on lay barges.
