TECHNICAL DESIGN OF EXHAUST GAS FILTERS. FINAL REPORT

TAKNISK UTFORMNING AV AVGASRENARE. SLUTRAPPORT

The purpose of this project - of which this is the final report - has been to provide a basis for how exhaust converters should be designed for best possible results in different operating situations. Both catalytic and water converters have been developed and tested. In two previously published reports, five different catalytic reactors were tested in regard to emission and flow characteristics. This report contains the results from studies on modified catalytic and water converters produced by Unikat AB. The tests were carried out on a Volvo D96 B suction engine and a turbo charged Scania DS8. Levels of CO, CO2, HC and NO/NOx were monitored as well as exhaust fume temperature and pressure. Engine related parameters such as fuel and air consumption, air pressure and temperature, humidity, engine revolution and load were also recorded during the tests. Most of the converters showed poor flow characteristics. One of the better converters had a 50 percent drop in pressure as a result of the modification. /TRRL/
