Riser Armour for Subsea Offshore Loading of Hydrocarbons in Shallow Ice-Infested Waters
With the development of offshore petroleum activities in arctic waters, there is an increasing need for a system that will allow safe offshore loading of hydrocarbons. Some areas of interest, as the Pechora Sea and offshore Sakhalin, are subjected to rough ice conditions several months during the winter. Shallow waters are also met and are an obstacle to some offshore activities. This paper presents a sub-sea loading system designed to work all-year round in arctic waters. A flexible riser linking a sub-sea installation to a ship is protected inside a steel armour made of conical elements. This armour protects the riser during possible impacts with ice blocks from level ice or ridges that may travel occasionally under the hull. At the sea bottom, an underground silo may be installed. This will store and protect the riser and the armour when not connected to a ship. In the silo the riser could be reeled, and will thus automatically adjust itself to the needed length. This system is independent to the way the riser is connected to the tanker, via e.g. a turret arrangement. This configuration allows environmentally safe hydrocarbon offloading in any ice conditions. It can be used in very shallow waters or be adapted to deeper waters.
