CONCRETE PAVEMENTS, WEST GERMANY

Theoretical investigations and practical experience have led in the Federal Republic of Germany to the increased construction of unreinforced concrete roads having no expansion joints and short distances between the transverse joints. The joints are dowelled as usual but do not have joint fillers in the lower part of the slab. Of particular importance is the porvision that the joints crack early so as to prevent uncontrolled cracking and to attain uniform, small joint grooves. Continuously reinforced concrete roads without pre-planned control of cracking have not yet been built. The construction materials and construction methods have not undergone any significant change. The trend is towards harder aggregates to reduce abrasion damage caused by steel studded tyres. This is the case both for coarse aggregate and for mortar. The use of air-entraining agents has proved a good protection against frost damage for many years, and therefore will be continued. A marked improvement in skidding resistance can be obtained in the first year by roughening the surface of the concrete with brooms, preferably steel brooms. After the texture produced by the brooms has been worn down by traffic the surface of the concrete should still be as rough as possible and not have any smooth areas larger than 1 to 2 cm, so that aqua-planning is avoided. For the rest, the measures taken to prevent excessive abrasion by steel studded tyres correspond generally to those for improving the skidding resistance. Cement mortar, even in very thin coatings, has proved suitable for the repair of road surfaces if the work is carried out with care. /Author/
