CAUSE OF ABNORMAL WEAR IN PROPELLER SHAFT BEARING OF JNR FERRY AND COUNTERMEASURES

Increased dimensions and speedup of JNR ferries in recent years were accompanied with abnormal wear of propeller shaft bearings. The cause of the wear was investigated by a fact-finding survey, a ship test and a model test. As the result the trouble has been traced to a decentering due to hull strain in the welded structure, erosion by foreign matter such as silt contained in the bearing cooling water, a wide fluctuation of bearing pressure in ship's maneuvering, which is unique to a railway ferry, etc.
