PLANNING OF ROAD PROJECTS-EARTHWORKS-CZECHOSLOVAKIA
A numerical model of the ground has been worked out in Czechoslovakia, which constitutes a system for general use where the origin can be selected at will. In the new system the whole of the length of roadway considered constitutes a continuous structure of straights in plan, transition curves and circular curves in which there must be a balanced number of fixed values, together with the number of connections that are necessary in order that the alignment should form an harmonious entity. In the area of physical studies of earthworks projects, attention is being devoted to the improvement of coherent soils with lime and to the treatment of highly humid soils. Observations are reported of tests which have been made on soils containing 3 types of clay (kaolinite, illite and montmorillonite) The requisite results have been obtained by the addition of 4 percent of lime and occasionally even less. It is considered advantageous to utilize fly ash derived from lignite to treat the clays forming road embankments and fills. The use of granitic eluvium for the active zones of the subgrade of pavements, and the application of the basic principles to the construction of the Prague-Brno motorway are considered in a discussion of the influence on design of the treatment of the treatment of the upper layers of the earthwork in contaxt with the pavement. Some degree of correlation has been found to exist between anaual humidity of the earthworks soil of a flexible pavement and its plastic limit. A method has been worked out (based on the measurement of the tractive resistance) which enables a continuous check to be made on the compaction of non-cohesive materials over the whole of the longitudinal section. A discussion of protection effective methods for reducing the moisture content of the subgrade, thermal and technical propoerties of pavements and protection against subgrade.
