Truck movements in the inner West of Melbourne: understanding the issues
There are over 20,000 truck movements a day in the residential and densely populated suburbs of Yarraville and Footscray in Melbourne. These truck movements are a highly contentious issue for the local community with a perception that most trucks on roads in the area are not undertaking business in the local area. However in order to create solutions for the local community there was a clear need to unambiguously identify the true magnitude of the problem. Previous data collection and studies in the area have been limited and focused on particular themes. GHD were commissioned by VicRoads and the City of Maribyrnong to undertake a study of truck movements through Yarraville and Footscray. The paper outlines the study background and methodologies used, as well as presenting some of the key results from the surveys, which were one of the largest of its kind undertaken in Australia in recent times.
