CURRENT STATUS AND DIRECTION OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF WATER-DISTILLING EQUIPMENT ON BOARD SHIP
The current status of both Soviet and foreign manufacturers vacuum distillation equipment is summarized in terms of size and weight related to daily output, electrical power, and heat expenditures. It is shown that the equipment has a volume of 1/6--1/8 and a weight 1/6--1/40 of the daily output of water. Large ships may use a multi-stage adiabatic distillation apparatus which in practice has almost completely displaced a two-or three-stage boiling distiller on new ships. Development of distillation apparatus and increasing economy in using it has led to broader use of distilled water on board ships--in some cases to its exclusive use in the sanitation system.
