Reality Check: Accurate Vehicle Safety Testing

This article describes test rigs for vehicles and vehicle components that have been developed or are in use by Bertrandt (Germany). Topics include test systems for active vehicle safety, such as those that identify stationary obstacles in the road and then apply the brakes autonomously or in conjunction with the driver; passive safety components, including the assessment of pedestrian protection systems and airbag testing; the development of a test sled that enables a wide range of acceleration and deceleration processes to be tested; and the importance of early and accurate testing in the design and development of vehicle safety features.
