CHANNEL TUNNEL AT LAST?
Government plans for going ahead with the Channel Tunnel and the rail link are presented in the White Paper published on September 12. Mr John Peyton, Minister for Transport Industries, stated then that the Government had decided, subject to the approval of Parliament, that it would be in the national interest for the Channel Tunnel to be built, together with a new 'high-quality' rail link to London. Agreement on financing had been reached with the French Government and the international group who would undertake the construction of the Tunnel.
