Crashworthiness Evaluation of Mass Transit Buses
In recent years, the National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) has begun studying mass transit bus crashworthiness and methods for improving industry reporting statistics, and this article summarizes recent research findings. Included in NIAR’s study are accident data analysis, structural crashworthiness evaluation, interior crashworthiness evaluation, and numerical modeling with finite element and multibody models. These evaluations yield guideline recommendations in a number of areas outlined in this article, including dynamic side impact, rollover, compatibility, operator safety, and passenger safety.
