With a view to strengthen and improve an 18 km length of an important highway, detailed field investigations were done and the additional thickness of pavement in terms of a bituminous macadam levelling and asphaltic concrete surface courses was suggested. The two mixes were designed based on the materials used for the project. Quality control was exercised during the construction of the two layers. This paper highlights the aspect of compaction control, and based on the data concludes that it is possible to obtain consistent field densities for a bituminous macadam mix also and that the value of 95 percent could be achieved with the available equipment in the country. It is recommended that the concept of job mix formula and field density be also incorporated in the relevant bitumen macadam specification. /AUTHOR/
