PREDICTION OF SETTLEMENTS AND PORE PRESSURES BENEATH A HIGHWAY EMBANKMENT AT NEW LISKEARD, ONTARIO

Estimates of immediate and total settlements and initial excess pore pressures during each stage of construction beneath an embankment to be completed at New Liskeard, Ontario, are presented. Pore pressures are calculated according to the postulated theories by Terzaghi, Skempton and Bjerrum, and Henkel's corrections suggested for the latter method. A description of the instrumentation (piezometers, settlement gauges, and settlement plates) that has been installed in the foundation clay to record the actual settlements and excess pore water pressures is included. The laboratory test results are tabulated and from these results it is suggested that the settlement below the centre line during stage 1 should be about five feet. The laboratory results indicate that the average ratio of the coefficient of consolidation in the lateral and vertical direction is about 2.2. Using this value the rate of consolidation settlement for stage 1 has been estimated.
