Electric Vehicle Paradise: How Hawaii Can Lead the Word in Deployment

This paper examines the potential for electric vehicles (EVs) on the Hawaiian islands. Hawaii presents a special opportunity for electric vehicle adoption due to its high energy costs, limited driving range, and significant adoption of solar photovoltaic panels. Greater adoption of EVs is hampered by insufficient charging infrastructure; a limited supply of EVs and little public outreach; high upfront vehicle costs; and a lack of model types popular in the islands. Solutions may include installation of more charging stations; new fleet purchases of EVs by car rental companies and public entities; and, removal of restrictions on net metering.
