Supertankers cut shipping costs for crude oil by as much as 50% and reduce channel port congestion. The author believes it seems inevitable that the U.S. will shortly begin constructing the deepwater facilities necessary to accommodate the larger vessels and reviews what engineers can learn from the European ports now in existence. An examination of three major European Port Facilities suggests that offshore development will be the solution to particular construction and energy problems within the U.S.
