Preparing for the Update of New Hampshire’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan: An RSPCB Peer Exchange

This report provides a summary of a peer exchange sponsored by the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) held in Concord, NH, May 18-19, 2011. The focus of the peer exchange was on updating New Hampshire’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) and establishing a Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) initiative in the State. The objectives were to: (1) Build a sustainable SHSP by energizing existing and developing cooperative partnerships among highway safety stakeholders; (2) Strengthen the goals, strategies, and performance tracking for SHSP emphasis areas; (3) Learn from others’ experiences in linking datasets and coordinating the exchange of safety data between agencies; and (4) Identify marketing strategies the SHSP and associated efforts, particularly related to TZD and adaptive behavior-marketing initiatives. Selected peers included Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).
