MEASURING STRATIGRAPHIC SECTIONS

This manual is a concise, comprehensive description of the field techniques of section measuring, the selection of sections and general field procedures, and the types of field problems encountered and their geometric solution, as well as errors to be avoided. Descriptions of measured units are outlined, emphasizing both observed lithic features and their interpretation. Topics considered in selecting a section include types of exposures, topography, structure, accessibility, limitations, routes of measurements, choice of units, and types of field procedure. Techniques for establishing control are direct contact measurements, use of Jacob staff, eye-height measurements, and use of plane-table and telescope alidade, transit and tape, compass and tape, compass and pace, maps, photographs, and altimeters, or combinations of control techniques. Types of measuremnts are of horizontal, vertical, and inclined layers, as well as measurements parallel to the strike. Descriptions of the rock units vary according to composition as sediments and sedimentary roacks, layered igneous rocks, or metamorphic rocks. All stratigraphic sections are adaptable to illustration by various types of graphic, photographic, and written presentation. /Author/
