REVOLVING PISTONS FOR HIGH POWER
About 36 years ago, Sulzer Bros realized the possible benefits to be derived from varying the surfaces heavily in contact and patented a piston which rotated about its vertical axis; the device has subsequently been successful in a class of highly pressure-charged two-cycle engines. Later, in the course of development of a high-specific-output engine for rail traction, the idea was examined again in 1967 and a further patent for piston-rotating devices was obtained.
