Implementation of a Management Assistance System Dedicated to Road Maintenance in Niger

Deploiement d'un Systeme d'aide a la Gestion de l'Entretien des Routes au Niger

The Republic of Niger is a West African country with a vast land mass (1.3 million km²), 80% of which lies in an extremely arid zone (Sahara and Sahel). While the population (17 million) remains primarily concentrated in the country's "more fertile" southern reaches, its extractive resources (gold, ,iron, coal, uranium, oil, etc.) tend to be in the north. As is the case in many West African countries, road infrastructure is the key to promoting economic and social development. Simply rebuilding roads that have fallen into disrepair is an inappropriate policy response to guarantee an efficient road network. Regular road maintenance aimed at keeping the level of service consistent is a suitable strategic target. Budget restrictions that impede achieving this target provide ample justification for implementing a tried and proven maintenance optimization process.
