POINTERS ON PREVENTING RIGHT-OF-WAY FIRES
There are three ways of preventing rail fires: (1) reducing the fire source; (2) adding spark arresters to locomotives; and (3) adding fire patrols. Positive action on all three fronts is needed. The record is excellent where railroads have gone to chemicals to reduce flammable sources. Continuous and broad use of herbicides in vegetation management programs will stamp out fire as a trackside problem.
