Use of lower temperature asphalt in pavement construction: Demonstration site construction, in service performance and specification
This report examines the feasibility of using lower temperature asphalt (LTA) in pavement construction. Binder and surface course layers of LTA and hot mix asphalt (HMA) were laid at a demonstration site in North Warwickshire in January 2014. The site was monitored for service performance and laboratory tests were conducted on the asphalt mixtures. Tests looked at mixture properties such as compactibility, stiffness, fatigue and fracture resistance, deformation, and water sensitivity. In addition, industry sources in the U.S. and Scandinavia were surveyed on the durability of LTA. It was determined that the use of LTA in pavement construction and maintenance is feasible and that lower temperature mixing conserves energy.
