The Forces Required to Produce Seabed Gouges

It is widely accepted that pipelines must be buried to avoid ice damage in ice-infested waters. In some cases, the gouging depth may be limited by the capabilities of the ice environment to apply vertical forces on the seabed, which has obvious significance for evaluating required pipeline burial depths. The vertical forces required to produce seabed gouges are not well understood. The paper considers the vertical forces required to produce seabed gouges. Detailed analyses were conducted with three-dimensional (3D) continuum modelling using Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) and Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) formulations. These analyses were first done to compare with results from medium-scale physical gouging tests; close agreement was observed between the modelling results and the data from the physical tests. Next, 3D continuum modelling was carried out to analyze more general cases, of which some included a buried pipeline as well.
