Polar View: Innovative Information Services to Support Navigation in Ice-Infested Waters
Polar View comprises a global network of scientists, private sector organizations and government agencies from 17 countries that have formed a strategic partnership to implement sustainable monitoring services for the world’s polar regions. Relying primarily on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite imagery, Polar View’s comprehensive portfolio of services provides vital information to a wide range of user communities concerned with safe shipping, marine operations, environmental protection, sustainable economic development and climate change adaptation. Emphasizing the delivery of tactical ice information in near real-time, Polar View services fill critical information gaps and complement products and services available from other sources, such as national ice services. One of the largest users of satellite imagery in the world, Polar View ingests approximately 6,800 high-and medium-resolution satellite images per year, together with daily passive microwave and global mode SAR datasets, to generate more than 4,700 map products, 50,000 image sub-sets and 15,000 global monitoring products. Users are central to the success of Polar View, and the continued expansion of the Polar View network is a direct result of the high level of user engagement achieved and a worldwide growing interest in Polar View services. Core users of Polar View services include governmental organizations with international, national, regional and local responsibilities, as well as commercial and not-for-profit private sector organizations. These core user bodies represent a much larger group of end users that benefit directly from the services, such as ships and offshore facilities operating in ice infested waters. Due to the network’s growing reputation among polar stakeholders, Polar View is playing an increasingly important role in defining and promoting standardization and best practices across all components of its service portfolio.
