LOG CHIPPER ADAPTED AS TIE-DISPOSAL UNIT

Log chipper manufactured by the Vermeer Manufacturing Co., Pella, Iowa, was adapted for railroad use by equipping it with a railroad/highway attachment and adding a self-propelling feature. The wood members to be reduced to chips are deposited in a hopper which moves back and forth over a cutter rotor or cylinder. This is 8 in. in diam and is provided with 45 carbide-tipped cutting teeth. The cylinder rotates at 1800 rpm and the hopper moves back and forth at the rate of 20 cpm.
