A Study on Hull Form Development for Ice Breaking Vessel in the Arctic
In 2006, Samsung Heavy Industries Co. Ltd, studied ice breaking tanker to have high performance under the circumstance of a growing market in the Arctic area. For economic operation at ice as well as open conditions, a series of bow hull forms with same aft body were designed and their performance were evaluated by model test. The performances at ice and open conditions were validated at Aker Arctic Technology Inc. and Samsung Ship Model Basin, respectively. This paper describes the design basis and performance evaluation for ice breaking tankers, and explains the hull form and ice characteristics with regards to ice resistance.
