The Legacy and Future of the Panama Canal: From Point of Transit to Transshipment Hub
The Panama Canal, which celebrated its centennial in 2014, will see a number of large expansion projects with high price tags over the next few years. These include dredging and widening projects and the opening of a new set of locks. In this article, the authors look back at the canal's historical role as a point of transit and examine its future as an international trade hub. They discuss the potential benefits and drawbacks of Panama Canal expansion and the impact it may have on the transshipment of container cargo.
