PEDALCYCLE AND SCOOTER ACCIDENTS IN 1968. PARTIAL REPORT NO. 1: PEDAL CYCLE ACCIDENTS

CYKEL-OCH MOPEDOLYCKOR 1968. DELRAPPORT 1. CYKELDYCKOR

This study contains an analysis of personal injury accidents involving cyclists, as reported by the police, which occurred in Sweden during 1968 (a similar study on moped drivers is also being carried out). The aim of the study was to describe the accidents in detail. The study comprised 2015 accidents, 318 of which were of such a specific kind that they were analyzed separately. The latter category includes accidents in which one of the vehicles involved had some technical deficiency or the drivers were intoxicated. The remaining 1697 accidents occurred mostly in built-up areas and during the summer (April to September). One-third of the involved cyclists were children. The most frequent accident involved a cyclist and a motor vehicle. As many as 83% of the accidents belonged to this category. Accidents between a cyclist and a motor vehicle occurred mostly in built-up areas and three quarters of these at intersections. In 41% of the latter accidents the motor vehicle and the cyclist both travelled on the same road before the accident. Almost half of these accidents occurred at intersections when the motor vehicle and the cyclist were travelling on different roads before the accident, the two road users involved intending to cross the intersection without turning. At intersections with special priority rules, the cyclists broke these rules more often than the drivers of the motor vehicles. Some non-intersection accidents occurred when the cyclist turned left across the roadway in front of oncoming traffic. A large part - 45% - of the single-vehicle accidents in built-up areas occurred when a cyclist passed a parked car at the same time as the driver or a passenger of the car opened a door towards the roadway. /IRRD-IRF/
