YOUNG DRIVER PROFILE

This report developed through data from Missouri Statewide Characteristics in the profile include age, sex, drinking, Department, St. Louis County Police Department, and Missouri State Highway Patrol, is a profile identifying the characteristics of all drivers under age 25 who become involved in traffic accidents in Missouri during 1972. Charateristics in the profile include age, sex, drinking, type of license, physical condition, and motorcycle drivers. The collected information does not represent a random sample, nor is it free from errors or pretend to be all-inclusive. Data were grouped into 3 age groups and analyzed using the X (square) test for independence, a test which discovers differences among the 3 with respect to the characteristics in the profile and sex differences in drinking. The report tests how the age groups differ with respect to the relative frequency with which group members are distributed among the categories. At least 70 percent of young drivers involved in accidents are male, less than 30 percent are female. Nonresidents are more often involved in accidents and less than 2 percent of residents in accidnets have no license. The proportion of nondrinkers in accidents was greater, above or below age 16; the drinking driver was probably male. The physical condition of most drivers in accidents is probably normal. Less than 3% involved in accidents were operating motorcycles. Conclusions cannot be statistically applied to the general population of young drivers in Missouri. The percentage of females in accidents increases as the drivers' age increases. The report offers recommendations which list areas of concentration for study and provides the computer run sheets from STAR. /SRIS/
