Reshaping the Muni Metro

The reach of San Francisco's busy light rail network will be extended with the opening of the Central Subway in 2018, and reliability improvement and reduction of operating costs are expected with the delivery of new light rail vehicles (LRVs). In 2000, San Francisco's light rail services and other public transportation modes (under the brand of Muni Metro since 1980) were folded into the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (MTA), which is a department of the City and County of San Francisco and also oversees parking and traffic management, taxis, cycling, and pedestrians. While the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) metro network and Caltrain commuter rail connect San Francisco with the wider region, Muni is responsible for local travel within the city. Progress on the new subway construction is presented here, along with the importance of tourism to the system and maintenance.
