WEARING AND POLISHING OF STONE--A STUDY WITH HELP FROM THE ELECTRON MICROSCOPE

Studies were made of surfaces of mineral aggregates used for surface courses. The surface texture, inaccessible for the light microscope, is of importance for the understanding of the wearing and polishing characteristics of road aggregate, adhesion with binders etc. In order to achieve fundamental knowlenge of different wearing and polishing processes, the surface conditions of aggregate particles were studied after laboratory tests. Furthermore, aggregates worn by studded tires in the Institute's road test machine, were studied. Finally particles of a quarzitic aggregate were taken during different seasons from a test road (surface dressing) in western Sweden in order to make a pilot study, especially of the differences in surface texture depending on traffic with unstudded and studded tires. Patterns of brittle fracture and microplastic deformation have been observed in connection with different wear processes, the latter being dominant during the polishing process.
