NO MAGLEV FOR SECOND TOKAIDO LINE
Japan's Ministry of Transport has criticized JNR officers who are "over-enthusiastic" about maglev trains--and Ministry plans call for construction of a second 'conventional' Shinkanses line between Tokyo and Osaka by 1980. A Ministry statement says: "The linear-motor-driven magnetic levitation train now being developed is still premature because of technical difficulties, high construction costs and inadequate economic benefits."
