THE HANDLING OPERATIONS INVOLVED IN GOODS DISTRIBUTION

The results of a study that was performed in 1972, the purpose of which was to compare costs in handling goods shifted from pallet to pallet as opposed to shipper packed units, is given. Since the handling operations are the most expensive part of the total transportation, and handling costs are continually rising, it is important to separate the handling costs from the underway costs so as to be able to allocate them correctly and in proper relation to the overall transport costs. This study has examined handling costs as an individual segment of the transportation system, and the findings are given and explained, with the amount of possible savings that could be realized included in the presentation.
