Significant reduction in frost depth and therefore in foundation thickness for roads and railways can be achieved by two fundamentally different procedures. Moist bottom layers (peat, bark) can be built in, or material with a high degree of heat insulating effect, such as extruded polystyrene, can be inserted. In the case of moist bottom layers a large amount of heat is liberated by freezing of water to ice. In the second case heat stored by the soil during summer is activated. A combination of these two methods might also give a good result. The paper introduces a simple mathematical model for the design of frost foundations. The sum of the frostheat and soilheat resistance against frost penetration is calculated as being equal to the frost quantity in the air (for instance the maximum frost quantity of the location in question). Heat parameters of different materials, and meteorological data are also presented. /TRRL/
