THE ENERGY CRISIS--CRUNCH ON TRANSPORTATION (LUNCHEON ADDRESS)

CONGRESSMAN ADAMS SPEAKS TO THE POOR HANDLING OF THE ENERGY CRISIS BY THE ADMINISTRATION IN ITS REFUSAL TO FACE THE FACT THAT PETROLEUM PRODUCTS ARE CONTROLLED BY AN OLIGOPOLY, SO THAT A FREE MARKET DOES NOT EXIST. THE AUTOMOBILE IS THE LEAST ECONOMICAL CONSUMER OF FUEL AND SHOULD BE GIVEN LOW PRIORITY IN CONTRAST WITH TRAINS AND BUSES. IT IS WRONG AND INEFFICIENT TO RELY ON A PERCENTAGE CUTBACK OF CERTAIN INDUSTRIES FOR CUTTING USAGE, AS IN THE AVIATION INDUSTRY. THE ENERGY CRISIS MAY BE HELPFUL IN THE LONG RUN AS A TEACHING METHOD TO MAKE BETTER USE OF TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES. GOOD RAIL SERVICE IS A TYPE OF PUBLIC UTILITY; TO IMPROVE THEIR FUEL EFFICIENCY IS TO IMPROVE THEIR SERVICE. LEGISLATION ADVOCATING WIDER USE OF BARGES, CONTAINERIZATION AND PIGGYBACK OPERATIONS SHOULD BE SUPPORTED FOR THE SAKE OF REDUCED ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND GREATER EFFICIENCY.
