ROLE OF THE COMPUTER IN TRANSPORTATION--KEYNOTE ADDRESS NO 1

THE AUTHOR SITES EXAMPLES OF HOW COMPUTERIZED INFORMATION SYSTEMS HAVE INCREASED EFFICIENCY IN RAIL FREIGHT OPERATIONS, IN THE FAA'S AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM, AND IN STEAMSHIP COMPANIES LOCATING OF CONTAINERS. HE ADVOCATES A NEED FOR MORE EXTENSIVE AND STANDARDIZED COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS ESPECIALLY IN LIGHT OF THE INCREASING EMPHASIS ON INTRA-MODAL AND INTER-MODAL COMMODITY MOVEMENT. ALREADY THE TRANSPORTATION DATA COORDINATING COMMITTEE HAS BEEN WORKING ON GETTING STANDARD CODING SYSTEMS ACCEPTED. THE COMPUTER INDUSTRY MUST CONTRIBUTE TOO BY CUTTING DOWN THE COST OF HARDWARE AND DEVISE LARGER, MORE RELIABLE AND MORE ACCESSIBLE SYSTEMS. STANDARDIZED TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION SYSTEMS, THE FREE EXCHANGE OF DATA ON AN INTER-MODAL BASIS, WOULD BE ECONOMICAL, FAST, EFFICIENT AND COULD POTENTIALLY BE A LINK WITH OTHER INDUSTRIES AND OTHER ANTIONS.
